Huskers Tame 'Cats' In Decisive Third Quarter
LINCOLN (BS) -- Trailing at halftime for the first time all season, Nebraska came out swinging in the 3rd quarter to preserve their undefeated season.
Dahrran Diedrick led the Huskers with 108 yards on 24 carries, including a 2-yard touchdown that capped the opening drive of the third quarter. Nebraska drove 77 yards on 15 plays while eating up half the quarter.
Later in the third period, Nebraska got a big play on special teams from DeJuan Groce, who scored on a 60-yard punt return. The Huskers also scored on defense when Willie Amos returned one of his two interceptions 20 yards for a first half touchdown.
In the past, an 11-0 record usually meant Nebraska was finished with the regular season and waiting to play Miami or Florida State in the Orange Bowl. This year, it simply puts them one step closer to a Rose Bowl berth.
With the win, the Huskers (11-0) retained their #1 ranking in this week's Cornerstone BS Poll. Following the loss, Kansas State (4-5) fell from the much-ballyhooed rankings.
Following their 40-27 beating of Iowa State, Colorado (8-2) made an impressive leap to claim the #2 spot. The Buffaloes will host #1 Nebraska in Boulder on November 23rd.
Oklahoma (8-1) defeated Texas A&M 31-10 to reclaim #3. Miami (8-0) is #4 after squeaking past Boston College 18-7. Texas (9-1) moved up to #5 after blanking Kansas 59-0.
Rounding out the Top 10 is sixth-ranked Florida (8-1), Oregon (9-1), Maryland (9-1), BYU (10-0) and Illinois (8-1).
