Huskers, Irish Gear Up For Showdown
LINCOLN (BS) - After a 42-14 dispatching of Division I-A newcomer Troy State on Saturday, Nebraska quickly turned its attention to their next opponent, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Nebraska's victory was not the blowout many were expecting, but it allowed the Huskers to retain their #1 ranking in this week's Cornerstone BS Poll.

Following their first D-1 loss, Troy State fell from the Top 10, allowing Notre Dame to climb one spot. The ranking sets the stage for a dramatic #1 vs. #2 matchup on Saturday night in Lincoln.

The game is the second in a home-and-away series that began with last year's 27-24 overtime victory in South Bend. Eric Crouch rushed for three scores in that game, including the 7-yard run in overtime that sealed a victory for the Big Red.

An estimated 30,000 red-clad Husker fans filled the seats at Notre Dame Stadium, simulating the ³sea of red² synonymous with Nebraska home games. Despite their reputation for travelling well, Irish fans are not expected to duplicate the feat in Lincoln.

Nebraska has won the last two meetings between the teame to even the all-time series at 7-7-1. Though they have not played often enough to establish a true rivalry, no one will deny that bragging rights are at stake.

"Yep," said coach Frank Solich, "they are."
