Huskers Top TCU; Retain Top Ranking
After a weekend of preseason "classics" involving ranked teams, Nebraska retained the top position in this week's Cornerstone BS Poll.
The Huskers (1-0) defeated TCU 21-7 in the Pigskin Classic, relying heavily on their young defense against the Horned Frogs. Despite an inconsistent showing by their offense, Nebraska again received a boost from the computer, fan, and mascot/uniform components of the poll.
Troy State, Nebraska's next opponent, jumped from third to second despite not playing a game. It is believed to be the Trojans' highest ranking since joining Division I-A this year. The ranking also ensures a second consecutive one versus two matchup in Lincoln to start the season.
Notre Dame, the Huskers' opponent on September 8th, moved up to third with strong mascot and schedule rankings. Florida, the number one team in the AP and coaches' polls, is a solid fourth. Rice, another Nebraska opponent, quietly climbed to 5th.
Oklahoma, a 41-27 winner over North Carolina in the Kickoff Classic, moved up two sports to 6th. Rounding out the BS Poll Top 10 is Miami, Florida State, Missouri, and Texas.
