Invades Happy Valley
LINCOLN (BS) -- For the first time since the 1982 season, the #2 Huskers visit Penn State, JoePa and the #3 Nittany Lions.
Of course, many questions still linger from that fateful day and the game's controversial ending. In particular, one question has been asked by Husker fans for years...
What the hell is a Nittany Lion?!
Since we at the BS Poll refer to ourselves as "The Friendly Geeks," we figured we'd take it upon ourselves to crack the conspiracy. Here's what we discovered after five minutes of back-breaking Internet research:
Since Penn State is located in the Nittany Valley at the foot of Mount Nittany, their lion was designated as a Nittany Lion. In regional folklore, Nittany (or Nita-Nee) was a valorous Indian princess in whose honor the Great Spirit caused Mount Nittany to be formed.
Well, that explains that. However, we still don't understand why they call their stomping grounds Happy Valley, or why their home games are played in Beaver Stadium. Hmmm...can you say "identity crisis?"
Somehow, despite all the confusion and an unimpressive opener against Central Florida, Penn State (1-0) rocketed to #3 this week just in time to host #2 Nebraska (3-0).
Instead of occupying the top spot in the BS Poll, the Huskers instead find themselves taking a backseat to #1 Miami, who stomped unranked Florida 41-16 in "The Swamp." (Not even we could justify ranking them #2.)
Big XII foes Oklahoma (2-0) and Texas (1-0) weigh in at #4 and #5, respectively. Rounding out the BS Top 10 is sixth-ranked Virginia Tech (2-0), Tennessee (2-0), Iowa State (2-1), Michigan (2-0) and Arizona State (2-1).
