Record Husker Streaks in Serious Jeopardy
LINCOLN (BS) -- Ouch. This one really hurt. How could this happen? I don't feel so good. Did I just dream that? I need to be alone now. The Kansas game is at home, right?!
Those were just a few of the responses that came from our collective mouths following Nebraska's 24-21 loss at Oklahoma State. That's right, Oklahoma STATE... the same team that hadn't beat the Huskers since the Kennedy Administration.
A 41-year winning streak against the Cowboys was erased in just 60 minutes on Saturday. Recently, Iowa State and Colorado also halted 10-year losing streaks against Nebraska.
The loss to Iowa State knocked the Huskers out of the Top 25 for the first time since 1981. Now, NU's prized streak of 33 consecutive nine-win seasons appears almost out of the question. At best, their related streak of bowl game appearances stands at risk.
Amazingly, Nebraska's current 26-game home winning streak is the longest in the nation. However, with home contests against Texas and Colorado still looming, they'll be hard-pressed to extend it.
About the only streak that appears safe is Nebraska's unprecendented string of 252 consecutive sellouts at Memorial Stadium. Unless the Lincoln Capitols are suddenly granted NFL status, we don't see that ending anytime soon.
