NU Vents Frustration Against Texas A&M

LINCOLN (BS) -- We admit, we were at a loss for words when the Huskers blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter against the Misery Tigers last week.

Withstanding fumblitis and other first-half breakdowns, it appeared that NU found victory in the third quarter when they scored twice, turning a 14-10 halftime deficit into a 24-14 lead.

Then, the weary Blackshirts allowed a PlayStation-like 27 points in the fourth quarter. It was an unprecedented turn as the NU defense has scarcely allowed any second-half points all season.

It proved once again that, this season, you cannot take a win for granted. The defeat had some predicting losses in the majority of NU's remaining games.

Whereas that outlook seemed radical in the days following MU's trick-play circus, it appeared downright ludicrous following a 48-12 thrashing of Bill Byrne's new-look Texas A&M Aggies.

Those questioning the resiliency of Bo Pelini's defense were treated to a record-tying, eight-turnover performance. Among the many highlights was Josh Bullocks' seventh interception of the year.

Merely halfway through the season, the sophomore leads the nation at 1.0 per game, and has already tied the Nebraska single-season record.

Though Josh's belief-defying pace will be difficult to maintain against the heart of NU's schedule, you have to believe that the NU record will be his shortly.

Our advice to Iowa State: hang on to the football, and avoiding throwing at Josh Bullocks. For that matter, avoid throwing at Dan Bullocks, too, or anywhere near Fabian Washington.

Whereas the Cyclones are coming to town with bragging rights for the first time in a decade, both NU and ISU are vastly different from last year.

Iowa State, minus Seneca Wallace and his infectious confidence, have stumbled to a 2-5 start. In their three conference games thus far, they have been blown out by an average of 48-16. Ouch.

Nebraska, on the other hand, boasts a vastly improved defense and an offense best described as "steady." It would be hard to imagine them losing to ISU, even with the taste of defeat still fresh.

Whereas the Huskers will have to exact their revenge on Misery next season, the 2003 "payback" tour should stand at 3-0 after Saturday's game.

With Oklahoma State and Penn State out of the way, and Iowa State on deck, the revenge-mongers will next turn to Texas, followed by KSU and Colorado.

We have to say, though, this revenge stuff can be tiring. Wouldn't it be easier to just win them all from here on out?

Frank...? Bo...? Barney...? Bueller...?
